Rivals Fantasy Miniatures

A couple of very small hobbits in 10mm scale - Frodo and Sam, from the Copplestone Castings 'Heroes and Halfings' set.  I've painted them inspired by the Peter Jackson films.   My photos aren't brilliant (especially at this magnification - Sam's face is approx 2mm from chin to hair) but the sculpting likeness especially to Sean Astin as Sam is pretty impressive. In the 'Hordes of the Things' game rules, this element is a 'Sneaker' ("all bands of infiltrators on foot, such as bearers of magic rings... They do not fight, but can penetrate or deceive enemy troops to capture a stronghold or attack a general unless precautions are taken.").   With a 2p piece for scale reference

More 'Battle of the Five Armies' than 'Lord of the Rings', but I've been working through more elements of Dwarven infantry.  These are Sword and Axemen units ('Blades' in the 'Hordes of the Things' rules). 

From the Copplestone Castings 10mm 'Heroes and Halfings' pack, Gimli, son of Gloin - a Hero leader for the Dwarven 'Hordes of the Things' army.  Painted in acrylics and gloss varnished.  Based on a 2p coin.

Another Copplestone 10mm Fantasy 'Hero on Horseback', King Theoden of Rohan, accompanied by Gandalf the White, at the head of his Honour Guard of Rohirrim. Here he is solo, and with a 2p piece for scale. The cavalry are Copplestone 'Horse Tribe Royal Cavalry'.  The flag is hand painted paper, taking inspiration from the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings film design of the Royal Standard of Rohan.

Another figure from the Copplestone 10mm Fantasy range 'Heroes on Horseback' pack, here is Gandalf the White - returned from the dead to take Saruman's place as Head of the Istari - riding Shadowfax.  Very nicely sculpted figure and quite tiny. Before he got the makeover here he is as Gandalf the Grey, from the 'Heroes and Halflings' set.

 The first of a number of dwarf regiments - spearmen with a decidedly Viking theme.  

These are the first of the Riders of Rohan, painted as per the Peter Jackson films.  They are based on a 80mm x 60mm base and painted in acrylics with gloss varnish.

According to Tolkien, the Witch King of Angmar was one of the 9 Ring Wraiths or Nazgul.  Here he is, courtesy of Copplestone Castings, mounted on (an admittedly pint-sized) Fell Beast.   In the Hordes of the Things ruleset The Witch King would be an Aerial Hero costing 6 Army Points (the maximum unit cost).  The figure is painted in acrylics, gloss varnished, and mounted on a 2p piece. Next up is Saruman the White and the first regiments of his Uruk-Hai - the cross-bred Orcs that Saruman raised in Isengard, bearing his 'White Hand' symbol.   In Hordes of the Things, Saruman would be a Magician at 4 AP with a combat factor of +4 but able to 'bespell' opponents.  The Uruk-Hai champion (another Hero element) I guess represents Lurtz, the character inserted by Peter Jackson into the LoTR films but not in the original Tolkien stories.
